The Corvette carved out a unique space within the American car culture. In 1953, the American market needed an American flavored two-seater sports car to compete with the Europan options. The similar, early Ford Thunderbird evolved in an entirely different direction as years went on. The Corvette remained the original American sports car. Over the years, competitive efforts by the likes of the Dodge Viper and others certainly grabbed our attention. Meanwhile, the Corvette continued to improve, evolve and remain the showcase of GM’s best effort. Born in the original muscle car era, the Camaro was not just an answer to the insanely popular Ford Mustang. The Camaro debuted as a bold “gloves-off” response. The Camaro’s first-gen styling was daringly modern. Likewise, during the ’70s, when all domestic carmakers struggled, the Camaro held true to that same styling goal.
