Q- Can an 18″ spare be used on a Mercedes GLC with a different wheel size such as 17″ 19″, 20″, or 21″? 

A- Yes, Absolutely. 

For a properly designed spare tire assembly, overall tire height (not wheel diameter) is the important measurement. The overall height of the tires on your vehicle will generally be consistent regardless of the factory wheel size.   This allows Modern Spare to design an 18″ spare that is compatible with your vehicle model. *

*Not all fitments will result in an exact match in tire diameter. However, Modern Spare ensures that the tire size used for your vehicle model is the proper size and fit for your vehicle (including AWD, High-performance, and EVs).

    I have a 2019 Mercedes GLC300 RWD SUV. The spare tire kit fits perfectly under the floor cover of the rear storage area. The spare is tight to the fuse box cover but it did not crush and the rear storage area cover latches with no issues. Also, arrived much sooner than i anticipated. I’m much happier with a full size spare and my GLC300 rides smoother, quieter and handles better with a good set of standard (non run flat) tires!!

    Finally replaced the run-flat tires that came with my 2016 MB GLC300 and needed a spare tire to go with the new non-runflat tires.     I just wanted to say thank you for making a complete kit for a Mercedes GLC-300. I ditched the run flats that were horrible tires and needed a spare just in case. I am glad I spent the money on the kit because “just in case” happened about a month after I put on a set of normal tires. We picked up a screw in one of our rear tires at 6:30 pm on a Friday night (all the tire shops were closed) and were 120 miles from home. To top it off there was a snowstorm coming in and in order to get home I had to drive over a Southern Oregon Cascade Mountain pass that had packed snow and fresh falling snow for most of the trip. Time being of the essence I knew I had to get it changed and get on the road quick. With the help of the studs that hold the tire and make it easier to slide on and off I had the tire changed in 15 minutes and was on my way home. I made it home without issue and I owe it all to your company. Thank you again for making this product available to all of us who need it.

    Recently changed from Goodyear Run-Flats to Pirelli P-Zero tires after buying your “SKU MERGLC1529P” kit. Of course the ride was day and night better than the Run-Flats. Today I picked up a large Tapcon screw with of course killed my brand new left rear tire. No problem, jacked up the GLC43 and proceeded to install the Modern Spare. All went well and couldn’t be happier with the excellent engineering that went into the design of this kit. Drove to Mercedes and left with a new under warranty Pirelli P-Zero. The smooth ride was worth the price of the Modern Spare kit.

Carmakers are always changing, redesigning and improving the performance and efficiency of the vehicles they offer. These changes, although sometimes minor, must be considered carefully in spare tire design.

More than being lightweight

Let’s be honest, changing a spare tire is not fun. We understand this first-hand and who wants to eagerly venture out in the cold weather or blazing sun to change a flat? So, we simplified it. A narrow space-saving spare tire can be so much better than what carmakers used to provide.
We took our carefully engineered wheel design and partnered with a state of the art aluminum alloy wheel manufacturer. Each kit is purpose-built to be both lightweight and extremely durable. Also, each spare tire and wheel we offer is carefully engineered to be the right and correct fit for your car.

Durable and Strong

By utilizing a lightweight alloy wheel, the Modern Spare ® is 35% lighter than its steel counterpart. We engineered our lightweight wheel and tire to be tough and durable enough to travel farther than typical spare tires allow.* The combined effect of being tough and lightweight makes changing a flat tire much less strenuous in addition to providing peace of mind as you travel.

Ease Of Use

Getting back on the road should be easy

Changing a flat should be quick and easy. We achieve this by including purpose-built tools into every Modern Spare kit. The goal is to get you back on the road quickly. The TruLift scissor jack system promises to be the most simple and effective small jack that you will ever use. Thanks to its leveraged ratcheting system, our TruLift jack system requires just minimal effort to raise your vehicle and bring your car down safely.

Having the right tools

Stubborn lug nuts can add stress to an already stressful situation. We have included a telescoping breaker-bar style lug wrench. Our compact wrench features an extendable handle to provide optimal leverage. Even the most stubborn lug nuts are removed and reinstalled easily. Finally, since a flat tire is a dirty tire, we had the forethought to include a large plastic tire bag in each kit. You can now protect your car’s interior while transporting your flat to the repair shop.​

Extended Range

The old way…

Traditional spare tires once provided by carmakers typically had a limited range of fewer than 50 miles. The range limit is due to the cost savings of manufacturing a small limited-use spare tire. Likewise, these typical factory-supplied spares have a much smaller rolling diameter compared to the vehicle’s factory tire size. Using a spare that is so much smaller than your factory tires can put extra strain on the vehicle’s drivetrain and will often lead to failure if used for travel over the stated limit.

The new way…

Our kit is designed to better match the rolling diameter of your vehicle’s factory tires. This prevents excess strain on your vehicle’s drivetrain. Also, if the situation requires, this allows you to travel farther than the limited 50-mile range of old spare tires.* Each Modern Spare kit comes equipped with an actual reinforced tire for a more useful travel distance and at more normal highway speeds. With the right size spare tire, you can more easily complete your trip or travel to a repair shop of your choice. Whether you have AWD, a limited-slip differential, or a locking differential, our kit is safe for the sophisticated drivetrain of your car.

Has the global trade uncertainty affected Modern Spare in terms of inventory and price increases?

Yes and no –

Since our humble beginnings in 2016, relying on single manufacturing partners—and more so, partners in some countries that are vulnerable to trade conflict—is something we have avoided. This has proven effective over the years, and we hope it will help us navigate what may come in 2025.

We don’t anticipate significant price increases, if any, in the coming months. The real challenge may be disruptions in global shipping later in 2025 that delay shipments and put strain on inventories.

Thankfully, we’re well stocked now, and most new orders are being shipped out immediately.
